1. Why do you you think it matters that Shay escaped? Why are Special Circumstances so interested in finding her?
2. Do you think Tally will betray Shay? Why or Why not?

Welcome to the first book blog for "Uglies" by Scott Westerfield! Before you answer the following questions, check this out this site about the book and read the interview with the author.
1. Read pages 61 & 62. What do you think happened to "The Rusties" ? Use examples from the text to support your answer.
2. Who do you think David is? What is he doing in "The Rusty Ruins" ?
3. If you could get a surgery when you were 16 to make you look "pretty" (or even handsome, I suppose) do you think you would do it? Do you really think that looks matter that much? Explain your answer. Then read this article.

Uglies is a 2005 science fiction novel by Scott Westerfeld. Set in a future post-scarcity dystopian world in which everyone is turned "Pretty" by extreme cosmetic surgery upon reaching age 16. It tells the story of teenager Tally Youngblood who rebels against society's enforced conformity, after her new found friends Shay and David show her the downsides to becoming a "pretty". Written for young adults, Uglies deals with adolescent themes of change, both emotional and physical, and dealing with the revelation that "some of what you’re taught isn’t true, your parents are flawed human beings and the world isn’t constructed for your benefit."
